Parenting
Personally, I feel that the birth of my daughters was the gateway to my journey of self-discovery.
Pre-motherhood, I always thought of myself as pretty laid back, happy go lucky, with no real worries in my life.
Post motherhood was a different story all together though…!
I found myself being triggered so often by the things my daughter said and did, and discovered parts of myself that I really didn’t like. Becoming a mother was supposed to be this joyous, life affirming experience and yet it my world felt so far removed from this image. Yes, there were moments where I truly felt the unconditional love like I’ve never felt before, but with the absolute highs came the absolute lows of feeling angry, out of control and frustration.
Having experienced the emotional rollercoaster for a while, I decided there had to be another way and I picked up a random parenting book in the hope it might give me something. This book turned out to be a turning point in my life, it showed me so many possibilities beyond what I knew when I was a new mother. It showed me that far from there being issues with my daughter, it was me that I had to work on. The things that were triggering me were exact reflections of my wounds and my issues that I’d not dealt with and my daughter had shone a light on the work that I had to do, to welcome more peace into my life and re-discover the true ‘me’ that I’d been hiding for so long.
Through the work that I’ve been doing on myself, I’ve also come to the realisation that if we can change some of our attitudes to parenting, if we can connect with our children with compassion, empathy and love – I truly believe that we can change our society and our world. So many of our unwanted beliefs and behaviours stem from our childhood, so if we bring positive changes to the way our children view their world I’m confident that the world could be a better place for the future generations to come.
So if you’re finding yourself triggered, feeling any negative emotions come up that you’d like to explore further please get in touch. I’d love to support you in delving deep and bring you back to who you are underneath all the current beliefs and behaviours.
